Samsung Pixon M8800 Review

t-mobile-samsumg-pixon-sgh-t929-leica-detail

The Samsung Pixon is a gorgeous touchscreen phone with an amazing 8 MP camera. The phone is not too thick, not too wide, not too heavy and is just the perfect multimedia device with its massive touchscreen display. Can it become the king of multimedia phones? We have made a review to find the answer. In this review you’ll find details of

  • Design

  • Touchscreen Display

  • Buttons

  • Camera

  • Music And Videos

  • GPS

  • Web Browsing

  • Battery Life

  • Conclusion

Design

The design of the phone will not win any awards but it looks certainly nice. The model resembles every other model of this category from Samsung Omnia to Renoir to iPhone. The phone is not extremely thin as advertised as the 8MP camera module sticks out of its body. However it is not fat by any means and looks like a perfect multifunctional model.

Touchscreen Display

Most of the face of the phone is covered by its 3.2 inch 240X400 pixels WQVGA display which is standard for a multimedia widescreen display looking at 3 inch display of Renoir and 3.5 inch of iPhone. However the colors offered is only 262 k color rather than 16M colors which is a strange thing to expect from a company known for its beautiful displays. The brightness sensor is a nice addition to the list which increases brightness in sunny environment for better viewability. The touch sensitiveness is a little less than iPhone but far better than Renoir or other low budgeted touchscreen devices. So there is nothing to complain about the touchscreen.

Buttons

Other than using touch as primary input device, it also has some physical buttons. There are SEND and END keys which perform the usual call receiving and ending tasks. The middle button is mostly used to take you a step back. On the left side of the device there are Hold and shortcut keys. The right side has a dedicated camera trigger key. There is also a volume rocker key which doubles as a zoom manager in the camera mode. All the keys have good response.

Camera

The camera is the main attraction of this phone. The camera has many features that you only find in a standard digital camera such as face detection and smile shot. The advanced reduction features makes up for little shake of hand while taking a picture. The dual power LED flash isn’t any match for the Xenon flash but it is powerful enough to take pictures in darkest indoor conditions. The video capability is also amazing at 120 fps recording for fast moving objects. There is also a secondary front facing camera that you can use for making video calls.

Music and Video

The Pixon plays every format of audio that you can expect a high end phone to play. It plays MP3, AAC, AAC+, Enhanced AAC+ and WMA formats and also has an FM Radio with RDS. With an internal memory of 200 MB and supported Micro SD cards of upto 8GB you can store thousands of songs in it. But like other Samsungs it lacks a 3.5 mm headphone jack in its body. However the supplied earphone has a headphone jack port near the microphone. You can also use wireless bluetooth headset without any problem. The video player is also nice and touch sensitive as the music player. Watching videos fullscreen in landscape mode is no problem. You cal also fast-forward and rewind videos. Other than common video formats, it can also play Xvid and DivX videos.

GPS

It comes with in-built GPS and Assisted GPS. The GPS can be used to geo tag the photos in case you forget where they were taken. We expected to be able to use the GPS alongside Google Maps but the option did not appear.

Web Browsing

The web browser of Pixon is excellent and watching webpages in its large display is nice. The HSDPA platform supports download speeds of upto 7.2 Mbps but we missed the WiFi capabilities of the phone.

Battery Life

Battery life is another glitch of this device. The Li Ion battery capacity is only 1000m Ah. It is commonsense to include a larger capacity battery for a phone that has large LCD display and top of the notch multimedia capability. If you use the phone with normal internet activity and some music/video watching and also do some photo shooting, then you’ll need to charge it up every day.

Conclusion

At the end of the day it is a great camera phone with a beautiful touchscreen user interface, GPS,  FM Radio and plenty of memory. But the lack of WiFi may guide many potential buyers to Renoir or Omnia which are similarly specd phones but have the WiFi capability. But if you don’t bother about that, the selection of this mobile phone perfectly makes sense with its nice and sharp UI, cool web and music and surely the high end imaging capabilities.
